PHARMACIST’S GUIDE

A Pharmacist’s Guide to Olive Young: The Products I’d Actually Buy at Korea’s Favorite Beauty Retailer

If you’ve been following skincare trends lately, you’ve probably heard the excitement surrounding Olive Young’s first U.S. store opening in California.

Often referred to as the “Sephora of Korea,” Olive Young is one of the largest beauty retailers in South Korea and has helped introduce consumers to some of the most popular K-beauty products on the market.

As a pharmacist, however, I don’t choose skincare based on trends, packaging, or social media hype. I focus on ingredients, safety, and whether a product supports healthy skin.

The good news? Some of the products I already recommend are available through Olive Young and can also be found on Amazon, alongside several Korean skincare brands that prioritize gentle, effective formulations. (Also found on amazon…click my product page for direct product links.)

Here are the categories I look for when evaluating skincare products and some of my favorite Olive Young picks in each.

1. Barrier-Supporting Moisturizers

A healthy skin barrier helps lock in moisture and protect against irritation. When the barrier becomes compromised, skin can become dry, sensitive, and more prone to inflammation.

CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion PM

Why I like it:

  • Contains ceramides to support the skin barrier

  • Includes hyaluronic acid for hydration

  • Fragrance-free

  • Suitable for sensitive skin

Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Cream

Why I like it:

  • Lightweight yet hydrating

  • Contains birch sap and humectants

  • Helps support moisture balance

  • Well tolerated by many sensitive skin types

2. Gentle Cleansers

A cleanser should remove dirt, sunscreen, and makeup without stripping the skin’s natural oils.

The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser

Why I like it:

  • Gentle and non-stripping

  • Removes makeup effectively

  • Supports the skin barrier

  • Fragrance-free

Anua Heartleaf Pore Control Cleansing Oil

Why I like it:

  • Excellent first cleanse for sunscreen removal

  • Contains soothing heartleaf extract

  • Emulsifies easily

  • Leaves skin feeling soft rather than tight

3. Hydrocolloid Acne Patches

Hydrocolloid patches can help absorb fluid from blemishes while reducing the temptation to pick at them.

Olive Young Care Plus Acne Cover Patch (Original Formula)

Why I like it:

  • Simple hydrocolloid technology

  • Drug-free option

  • Helps protect blemishes from touching and picking

  • Easy to wear overnight

COSRX Acne Pimple Master Patch

Why I like it:

  • One of the original K-beauty acne patches

  • Multiple patch sizes

  • Helps absorb drainage from pimples

  • Affordable and easy to find

4. Fragrance-Conscious Options

Fragrance isn’t always problematic, but minimizing unnecessary fragrance can be helpful for those with sensitive skin.

Torriden Dive-In Low Molecular Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Why I like it:

  • Focuses on hydration

  • Lightweight formula

  • Minimal irritants

  • Layers well with other skincare products

SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Ampoule

Why I like it:

  • Very short ingredient list

  • Centella asiatica helps calm skin

5. Sensitive Skin Favorites

When skin is reactive, simplicity often works best.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Moisturizer

Why I like it:

  • Supports the skin barrier

  • Contains ceramides and niacinamide

  • Fragrance-free

  • Dermatologist recommended

Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum

Why I like it:

  • Contains green tea and panthenol

  • Lightweight and soothing

  • Helps support hydration

  • Gentle enough for many sensitive skin types

Final Thoughts

One thing I appreciate about Olive Young is that it offers both innovative Korean skincare brands and familiar dermatologist-recommended products.

Whether a product comes from Seoul, a drugstore shelf, or a luxury retailer, I always come back to the same principle:

Ingredients matter more than marketing.

When evaluating skincare, focus on products that support your skin barrier, provide appropriate hydration, and avoid unnecessary irritants for your skin type. Trends come and go, but healthy skin fundamentals remain the same.

As a pharmacist, these are the types of products I look for—and the products I would actually buy.

As a pharmacist, I try to make health-conscious decisions every day in my household—and skincare is part of that. For me, clean beauty is about choosing products thoughtfully, using ingredients supported by evidence, and simplifying routines for real life. Because self-care shouldn’t feel overwhelming. It should feel doable.
